Blocking would be your counter to melee as a monk. Guardian, Aegis, skills like that.

Here is a link to the stickied basics thread in Campfire section's Monk sub forum http://www.guildwarsguru.com/forum/h...t10222589.html It talks about the why of using Protection skills.

Anything that hinders a Melee char from doing what it's supposed to do:
Make it miss: Blocking Skills / Missing Curses / Blind condition Make it do less damage: Weak condition / Dulled weapon Make it take damage: Insidious Parasite / Spiteful Spirit / Empathy Reduce the damage your party can take: Displacement / Shelter / Prot Spirit / Bonds For example, these skills are useful against warrior bosses. If it's concentrating on 1 target, then prot spirit that target, put on SS, IP, Empathy and it can only do 50~60 dmg per attack, and will take ~140 per hit. |

Depending on whether he is talking about PvE or PvP it can be different. In any case, all of the above are right. If he is talking about PvP, then maybe he is saying that you need some skills against melee spikes. If so, you should consider using warrior stances (I don't do PvP much so I wouldn't know which ones are the best, but I think they use like defensive stance, disciplined stance and balanced stance...)
